Poker is a card game in which players wager money, or chips, against each other. It can be played socially for pennies, or professionally in casinos and other venues. It requires luck and skill, and can be extremely lucrative. Poker has many variations and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.<\/p>\n
A round of betting is started when all players have received their two hole cards. This is usually initiated by mandatory bets called blinds that are placed into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. Depending on the variant of poker, players may be required to call this bet, raise it or drop out.<\/p>\n
After a series of betting rounds, players reveal their hands. If no one has a winning hand, the player that raised during the last betting phase is said to have won the showdown. The original pot and any side pots are then split between the players that won the showdown.<\/p>\n
A poker game can be won by forming the best five-card hand. This can be done by making a straight, a flush, three of a kind or a full house. A player can also win by hitting the flop, the turn or the river. This is called having the “nuts”. If a player has pocket 7’s and the flop is 7-6-2, this is a good example of hitting the nuts.
