Poker is a game in which players bet on the relative strength of their hands. Minimizing losses with bad hands and maximizing wins with good ones is the key to the game. In most games, players place an initial contribution (called a blind or an ante) into the pot before they are dealt cards. They may then raise or \u201ccall\u201d the bet of their opponents. They may also check, in which case they leave their hand in the pot or fold.<\/p>\n
The cards used in poker are typically from a standard 52-card pack plus jokers (or wild cards). The suits are spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs; the highest card is an Ace. Some games use a different number of cards or include other special symbols (such as a pair of aces or one-eyed jacks).<\/p>\n
When a player has a strong hand, they put all their chips into the pot in order to win. They can also call a bet (by putting in the same amount of chips as their opponents) or raise it (by adding more chips). If they have no callable hands, they can fold. Occasionally, a player will say \u201ccheck\u201d to let everyone know they don\u2019t want to call any more; however, the other players must then either raise their own bet or drop out. The winning player then shows their hand and takes the pot. In a tie, the highest high card breaks the tie.
